The pitch is clean. What’s underneath it isn’t.

On July 27, 2026, X Money went live for US subscribers with loud headline numbers: no-fee payments, 6% APY, 3% cashback, 0% foreign-exchange fees. On a billboard it looks like the account that finally does everything. Read the fine print and a different product shows up.

The account isn’t free. It’s a $490-a-year subscription.

X Money only exists if you pay for X Premium+, which runs roughly $40 a month, about $395 a year on the web and $490 a year through Apple’s App Store. So “send money with no fees” is technically true and practically misleading: the fee is the money you hand over every year just to be let in the door. Every “free” transfer is stacked on top of a membership you can’t opt out of.

Before you move a single dollar, the meter is already running.

Reaching your own money fast costs 1.75%.

The free transfer out of X Money is ACH, which takes one to three business days. If you want your money now, an instant transfer to a debit card runs 1.75%, with a 25-cent minimum. Move $1,000 in a hurry and that’s $17.50 to touch cash that was already yours. “No fees” quietly means “no fees if you’re willing to wait.”

That 6% APY comes with asterisks.

The rate is variable and can be cut at any time. Premium+ subscribers get it; regular Premium subscribers only reach it after meeting direct-deposit requirements. A rate that can move the day after you deposit isn’t a number you build a plan around. It’s a launch headline, not a promise.

It’s US-only, and not even all of the US.

X Money is live in 41 states plus Washington, DC. New York and Massachusetts are excluded outright. And X has not yet published a full account agreement or fee schedule, so card issuance and replacement fees, ATM limits, and transfer limits remain officially undisclosed. If you earn or spend across borders, or you just like knowing the whole fee schedule before you sign up, this isn’t built for you.

The cost nobody’s pricing in: your money now lives inside your social account.

This is the one that isn’t on any fee schedule. With X Money, your balance is tied to your X profile, so it’s worth asking the questions the launch post skips. What happens to your money if your account gets suspended? Locked during a review? Caught in a wave of bans? People lose access to social accounts every day, for reasons that have nothing to do with money. When your dollars live inside that account, a moderation decision becomes a banking problem. Your money shouldn’t be one bad week on the internet away from being frozen.

What X Money actually is

X Money is a well-built subscription funnel welded to a social network. The payments are the hook, the roughly $490-a-year membership is the business, and your profile is the vault. That’s a fine deal if you already live inside X, never leave the US, and never worry about your account status. It’s a rough one if you just want dollars that behave like dollars.

A dollar account should be the product, not a perk
